About

First and foremost, I am a human-being living in New York City with my family.

The early years

I was born in the United Kingdom and grew up with a curiosity for how things work, that led to many disassembled items around the house; from He-Man toys to binoculars, but always a growth in understanding as well as an expanded idea of what is possible.

This naturally led me to computers, the programs of which I found I could more easily dis/assemble without fear of any familial repurcussions!

Apprenticeship

After school at 18, I opted to apply for an apprenticeship with BT Labs over heading directly off to University. Specifically, I joined the the Satellite Communications group working on improving the operation and monitoring of BTs Satellite Earth stations. Space, the final frontier! I had finally made it. πŸš€ The team I was assigned to were a fantastic group with their head in the clouds, exactly where I wanted to be. I wrote-up (mainly for my own memory) a little bit of what I remember about the biggest project I tackled during my apprenticeship here.

University

Having completed my apprenticeship, I set out to gain a deeper understanding of technology at the University of East Anglia gaining a BSc in Computer Science. My final year project was attemping to improve upon the various low-bandwidth voice encoding standards in use on mobile networks at the time; (g.711 PCM and G.726 ADPCM). I used the R language to implement, test and improve on those standards. Mostly successful, but sometimes with incomprehensible and hilarious results.
